Timo Stammberger / Exhibition / Berlin / Fotogalerie Friedrichshain

Upcoming exhibition of Timo Stammberger together with Norman Behrendt.

Unbekannt - Norman Behrendt / Timo Stammberger

We are happy to present “Unbekannt“, an exhibition showing works of the photographers Timo Stammberger and Norman Behrendt at the non-commercial art space Fotogalerie Friedrichshain. Please come to the opening, on the 14th of January, 19h.

Graffiti writers and other urban artists who work in public space, significantly influence the appearance of many cities and especially that of Berlin. In the exhibition “Unbekannt” (”Unknown”) the two Berlin based photographers Norman Behrendt and Timo Stammberger show portraits of some protagonists of these often difficult to access scenes. These people are often not perceived as artists, pursued by the police, and receive recognition only within their scene. But why do they follow an enormous pressure to perform, oppose the rules, and invest their money, time and energy into their art, with the risk of getting arrested? In “Unbekannt” the displayed artists are neither glorified nor condemned. Rather, Behrendt and Stammberger show intimate view of those, whose image is often distorted by the media.”

For more images see Burning down the house by Norman Behrendt and Urban Artists on Timo Stammbergers’ website.

The gallery is located central at the Warschauer Strasse S/U station (directions). More information at the Facebook group.

The photo on the flyer above is taken by Norman Behrendt.

Timo Stammberger / Portrait / Iz the Wiz

Presumably the last portrait taken of the legendary graffiti writer Iz the Wiz.

Timo Stammberger - Iz the Wiz

“Mike Martin, better know by his legendary IZ The Wiz persona was a pioneer of the 1970’s and 1980’s graffiti movement. He possessed a work ethic unlike most others. He spent countless nights painting subway panels, whole cars, end to ends as well as thoroughly bombing train cars and insides. His unparalleled work ethic was evident through his dedication and repetition, sometimes covering entire 8 car trains with his iconic IZ throw up painted from the 1st car to the last, sometimes with over a hundred throw ups per train. Sadly, for the past decade, Michael Martin had suffered from various problems believed to be derived from his years inhaling toxic paint fumes and dust from the subway tunnels.

This portrait was taken before IZ the Wiz’s final art show on June 12th 2009 in the Bronx, NY. Unfortunately, Mike “IZ The Wiz” Martin passed away several days later on June 17th 2009 in his brother’s home in Florida.”

Thanks to our friend Bart Rozyk for the words.
